#WildlifeWatchingDay in Michigan, Sep. 4, 2022

Having a designated day is a great opportunity to talk about the deeper meaning of Wildlife Watching Day.

#Wildlife Watching Day can be an advocacy tool (use the hashtag) as well as a great opportunity to simply enjoy and appreciate wildlife.

It’s official. It has a gold seal and the governor’s signature. Sunday, September 4, 2022, has been proclaimed the first “Wildlife Watching Day” in Michigan.

Attorneys for Animals has been working for several years to make this a reality and we received final notice earlier this week.

Many of you signed petitions calling for a Wildlife Watching Day, both online and in person at events. We redoubled our efforts when we saw how receptive you were to the idea.

September 4 falls on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors and … watch wildlife. Whether you hike, bird watch, photograph, or simply love nature, this day is for you.

Having a proclamation from the governor “on behalf of the People of Michigan” is symbolically significant. Having a designated day is a great opportunity to talk about the deeper meaning of Wildlife Watching Day and its focus on the animals themselves, not on what they can do for us.

It’s a golden opportunity to talk with friends and family about the need to change the system of wildlife management in this country. Wildlife is held in public trust and therefore all of us should have the opportunity for input into decision-making. Wildlife manfor agers must become more compassionate. They must focus on climate change and the extinction crisis, and protect species from these threats.
