Lunch + Legislation #19: What’s Up With … Rep. Tommy Brann’s Animal Welfare Bills (and there are many to talk about!)

Thanks to Rep. Tommy Brann, Michigan House of Representatives, for joining us to talk about his animal welfare bills now pending in the Michigan Legislature. He encouraged advocates to contact their elected officials with bill ideas and gave specific actions for you to take to advance two of his bills. View the video here.

1. Please call House Judiciary Committee Chair Rep. Graham Filler (517) 373-1778: Ask that he set a hearing on HBs 4784, 4785, 4786 which would clarify and re-define shelter for dogs, especially in extreme weather and has the support of many in Law Enforcement. This package would define what is required for shelter for dogs. If you have a personal story, please tell about it.

Just tell him you support the shelter bill

2. Please call Representative Roger Hauck, House Regulatory Reform Committee Chair, (517) 373-1789, regarding “Teddy’s Bills” HBs 4881, 4882 which would require a research facility to offer retired dogs, cats used in research to a MI rescue or shelter for adoption before euthanizing, and would a modest reporting requirement. Virginia has recently passed a similar bill. There was a hearing in Feb. but no vote. Please ask Chair Hauck to schedule a hearing and report this bill package from committee. and if you have a personal story, that is important to mention.

… urge Chairman Hauck to give us a vote”
